Autumn Reimagined: Pam Mayhew's Contemporary Vision of the Canadian Fall

September 2 – October 1, 2026 | The SHED Studio, Chetwyn Farms, Prince Edward County

There is a particular quality of light in a Canadian October — the way it catches the edge of a maple leaf, floods a field at dusk, or turns a stand of birch into something almost luminous. Pam Mayhew has spent years learning to see it, feel it, and bring it back to the canvas. This September, she brings that vision to The SHED Studio.

A Contemporary Artist in Full Voice

Autumn Reimagined is a new collection of small-scale oil paintings by Pam Mayhew — abstract landscape works that are vibrant, emotionally charged, and unmistakably rooted in the Canadian land. These are not literal depictions of fields and forests. They are felt landscapes: the energy of a colour, the rhythm of a treeline, the atmosphere of a season caught at its most vivid.

Mayhew works with a painter's instinct and a naturalist's eye. Her canvases are intimate in scale but expansive in feeling — the kind of work that rewards close looking, where each layer of paint reveals something new about the land and the artist's relationship to it. Bold, warm, and deeply considered, her autumn paintings capture what the camera cannot: the emotional truth of the season.

The Farm as Studio

What makes this exhibition extraordinary is its setting. The SHED Studio sits on a working farm surrounded by open fields, woodlands, and the wide Ontario sky — the very landscape that informs Mayhew's paintings. Visitors don't simply view the work in a white-walled gallery; they step into the world that made it.

The farm becomes part of the exhibition. The exhibition becomes part of the farm. It is a rare and genuine alignment of art and place.

In Conversation with the Group of Seven

Mayhew's work enters into a rich and ongoing conversation with Canada's most celebrated landscape tradition. The Group of Seven — Thomson, Jackson, Harris, MacDonald, Lismer and their contemporaries — established a radical idea: that the Canadian landscape was not merely a backdrop, but a subject worthy of the full force of artistic attention. Their works, many now held in the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, remain among the most powerful expressions of Canadian identity ever made.

Mayhew honours that legacy while pushing it forward. Where Tom Thomson sketched Algonquin's electric autumn from a canoe, Mayhew finds her equivalent in the fields and woodlands of Prince Edward County. The impulse is the same — to stand in the landscape, to feel it, and to bring that feeling back to the canvas — but the voice is entirely her own.

Plein Air Painting Experience with Pam Mayhew

At the heart of Autumn Reimagined is a special Plein Air Painting Experience led by the artist herself. Participants will leave the studio and venture into the farm's autumn landscape — sketching, observing, and painting in the open air under Mayhew's guidance.

This is an opportunity to learn not just technique, but a way of seeing: how to slow down, look carefully, and translate what you feel about a place into something on paper or canvas. Whether you are an experienced painter or have never picked up a brush, Mayhew's approach is generous, encouraging, and deeply rooted in the joy of direct engagement with the land.

Spaces are limited. Early booking is strongly recommended.

Come and See

Autumn Reimagined is presented during the most spectacular season in Prince Edward County — when the light shifts, the colours ignite, and the landscape becomes impossible to ignore. It is an exhibition, an experience, and an invitation: to slow down, step outside, and see the Canadian fall through the eyes of one of its most compelling contemporary interpreters.

We hope to see you at the farm.
