Prince Edward County has become one of Ontario's most beloved rural destinations — and over the years, it's also become home to something unexpected: a genuine alpaca farming community. At SHED Chetwyn Farms, we've been part of that story from the beginning.
Our Story
SHED Chetwyn Farms didn't start as a tourism concept. It started with a herd, a piece of land, and a deep commitment to raising alpacas properly — for their fibre, for their wellbeing, and for the community we wanted to build around them. The encounters, the workshops, the fibre studio: all of it grew organically from that foundation.
That provenance matters. When you visit an alpaca farm, you're not just buying a ticket — you're stepping into someone's life's work. The animals know the people who care for them. The fibre in our yarn and socks came from our herd. The workshops happen in our studio, taught by artists we've built real relationships with over years.
What Authentic Looks Like
There are a few things worth looking for when choosing an alpaca farm experience in Prince Edward County or anywhere in Ontario:
- How long have they been farming alpacas? Genuine alpaca husbandry takes years to develop. The health, temperament, and trust of the animals reflects the depth of that relationship.
- Is the fibre traceable? At SHED, our alpaca yarn and alpaca socks come from our own herd — not imported or generic stock.
- Who runs the experiences? Our alpaca encounters are led by people who live and work on this farm — not seasonal staff reading from a script.
- Is the programming original? Our workshop series brings together established Ontario artists and makers — people we've worked with for years, not a copied format.
Why It Matters
Imitation is, in some ways, a compliment. When others model their offering on what you've built, it confirms you were doing something worth noticing. But for visitors, it's worth knowing the difference — because the experience of being on a farm with deep roots, real animals, and genuine craft is simply not the same as a replica.
SHED Chetwyn Farms is the original. We're proud of what we've built, and we're not going anywhere.
