Autumn Reimagined: In the Spirit of the Group of Seven

September 2 – October 1, 2026
The SHED Studio

A new collection of small-scale oil paintings by abstract landscape artist Pam Mayhew.

This autumn, The SHED Studio invites visitors to experience the Canadian landscape not simply as a subject to be observed, but as a living source of inspiration. Featuring a new collection of small-scale oil paintings by abstract landscape artist Pam Mayhew, Autumn Reimagined explores the enduring influence of the Group of Seven through a contemporary artistic lens.

Inspired by the extraordinary works held in the McMichael collection and by the pioneering spirit of Canada’s early landscape painters, Mayhew has created a body of work that reflects the colours, rhythms, and emotional energy of the Canadian fall. Her paintings capture the essence of the land rather than its literal details, translating familiar forests, fields, and skies into vibrant contemporary expressions that feel both timeless and distinctly current.

What makes this exhibition unique is its setting. Situated on a working farm surrounded by open fields, woodlands, and expansive skies, The SHED Studio becomes more than a gallery—it becomes part of the story. Much as the Group of Seven ventured into the wilderness seeking direct engagement with the landscape, visitors are invited to experience the natural environment that informs and inspires Mayhew’s work.

Plein Air Painting Experience

At the heart of the exhibition is a special Plein Air Painting Experience led by the artist. Participants will leave the studio and venture into the farm’s landscape, immersing themselves in the sights, colours, and atmosphere of the season. Through observation, sketching, and painting, guests will discover the creative process that has inspired generations of Canadian artists.

Whether an experienced painter or a curious beginner, participants will be encouraged to interpret the landscape in their own way, creating a personal connection to the land and to Canada’s rich artistic tradition.

About the Exhibition

Presented during the most spectacular season of the year, Autumn Reimagined celebrates the brilliant colours, changing light, and quiet beauty that have captivated Canadian artists for generations. It is both an exhibition and an invitation—a chance to slow down, step outdoors, and see the landscape through fresh eyes.

By bringing together art, place, and participation, this exhibition honours the legacy of the Group of Seven while reaffirming a timeless truth: that Canada’s greatest studio has always been the landscape itself.
