Tapestry Weaving Artistry - Weaving with Dianne Kennedy Cruttenden
- Description
Join us for an unforgettable tapestry weaving workshop with Dianne Kennedy Cruttenden. While weaving generally is a process of interlocking threads to create many different types of fabric - This workshop explores weaving as a general process and dives into the specific technique of Tapestry, which can be wall hangings made of woven cloth that depicts (often complex & detailed) imagery or patterns.
Historical tapestries have been created throughout various periods of history, with notable examples originating from medieval and Renaissance periods. These iconic tapestries were typically commissioned by wealthy patrons, nobility, or religious institutions to commemorate significant events, celebrate important figures, illustrate historic narratives and/or depict religious scenes and themes. Not only decorative elements, these tapestries served as a means of storytelling and conveying cultural and political messages! Metaphorically, we use tapestry to mean something that is made up of lots of different intertwined parts eg., “The rich tapestry of life/“life’s rich tapestry”.
This workshop is the perfect hands-on way to conceptualize your creative ideas and - the relationship between, warp and weft. No previous weaving experience is necessary! The joys of tapestry weaving awaits you!
Materials Kit: All materials are provided, ensuring you have everything you need to embrace your creativity and develop your tapestry weaving skills AND - be able to complete your own small tapestry. An image will be supplied but feel free to bring your own ideas to be explored. Learning a variety of techniques, including plain weave, rya knots, soumack, eccentric weave and irregular hatching, Dianne will also share tips to create designs while exploring form, colour and texture. Also included - A large selection of beautiful yarns to choose from and a simple frame loom to take home and use again, tapestry bobbins, needles, a bamboo tapestry, everything you will need to create a tapestry.
